The thing that struck me most about visiting the Very Large Array (VLA) - besides the middle school science project feel of the whole thing - was that everyone there seemed to be living in the '70s. Almost like the world stopped turning in '76 and just never started up again. And that was really cool. I like the timeless quality of these massive dishes surrounded by nothing but weeds and cows and sky. You could visit today or 30 years ago, and it would look the same.
